Maison Dourthe took over the running of Château La Garde in 1990, convinced of the potential of its exemplary terroir, which lies on a gravel outcrop. Some of it boasts large pebble stones to a depth of 4 metres, perfect for well structured Cabernet Sauvignon. Lower down the slopes, there are a fewer pebbles with a little clay and sand – this is where the fruitier style Merlot is cultivated. Since the beginning, they have employed methods to help preserve the natural environment and are now part of the Terre Vitis group. The 2017 is two thirds Cabernet Sauvignon, one third Merlot, with over a year's ageing in oak, this is a balanced wine with good fruit concentration and a supple tannin frame. Good choice with rich fare, such as game pie.
