The famous Dourthe company bought Château La Garde in 1990, convinced of the potential of its unique terroir. Indeed, it lies on a very special gravel outcrop, possibly the finest in the appellation. Some of it boasts large pebble stones to a depth of 4 metres, perfect for well structured Cabernet. Lower down the slopes, there are a fewer pebbles with a little clay and sand - this is where the fruitier style Merlot is cultivated, as well as some white grapes. Since the beginning, they have employed methods to help preserve the natural environment – one of the first to do this – and are now part of the Terre Vitis group. Cabernet dominated, with over a year's ageing in fine oak barrels, this is a true vin de garde. Ideal with rich game pie.
