Given that this family owned estate lies a short stroll from Châteaux Lafite and Mouton Rothschild, you might expect its wines to command hefty prices. Fortunately, Château Ramage La Batisse is just outside the Pauillac boundary, making its price far more attractive to the average wine lover. Georges Pauli, a winemaker of world renown, is consultant here and in 2010 was gifted a near-perfect vintage. Perhaps then it should be no surprise to learn this remarkable red added another trio of Golds to the family’s impressive trophy cabinet. It has all the classic hallmarks of Haut-Médoc claret with quite extraordinary balance and finesse. An impressive dinner party claret in ideally sized magnums to serve with a game casserole or rare beef.

"An elegant style of Bordeaux, with loads of tobacco smoke and tobacco leaf, red and black currants" Robert Parker
