Our native-born Bordeaux buyer Jean-Marc Sauboua uses his wealth of connections to secure you the best range of wines at the keenest prices. So when inheritance complications forced the Carrille family to sell their enviably sited Grand Cru vineyard in Saint Emilion (to Château Angélus, no less), they gave Jean-Marc the keys to their cellar. There, stored in perfect conditions, lay vintages dating back to 1947, stored in a variety of bottle sizes. And Jean-Marc was given his pick. Of the many great vintages he tasted, he was keen to see how the 1989 vintage fared, because received wisdom dictates hot vintages can’t be ageworthy. However, when he uncorked a half bottle, he was delighted to find the 1989 was still offering pretty fruit.
