Castillo de Javier Reserva 2009

Navarra DO

A terrific parcel of wonderfully mature Reserva. You don’t often come across one that’s nine years old and definitely not one at such a good price. Tempranillo with dashes of Cabernet and Garnacha, aged long in oak, silky, rich and lavish.

Speaking Spanish so well, our Buyer Beth has an excellent network of contacts. So when there’s a parcel of wine that needs a home, bodegas always give her a call. This fine Reserva is the result of one of her strongest Rioja friendships. The family recently bought an estate over the border in Navarra. Stored deep underground they discovered stocks of some exciting old vintages in great condition. Needing the cellar room, they offered her first the 2004, but that didn’t last long. The 2006 didn’t either and the 2009 is likely to be equally popular. For Rioja devotees, it’s a sure-fire winner. Tempranillo blended with Cabernet and Garnacha, it was aged a year in barrel and many years in bottle. Ideal with tapas, chicken, kebabs or on its own.

"Mature Tempranillo and toasty vanilla oak flavours are beautifully integrated in this silky red" Beth Willard
