At their Valtellina Valley estate in northern Italy, the Mascioni family are making reds that rival fine wine greats like Barolo – informally known as “the king of wines and the wine of kings”. This luxurious ‘Riserva’ edition of their superb La Gatta Valtellina Superiore uses 100% Nebbiolo (the grape of Barolo) that has enjoyed an extra-long slumber in fine oak barrels.Established in the 16th century, the La Gatta estate was originally a convent. Then in 1969 the Mascioni family moved in and transformed it into favourite destination for fine wine lovers everywhereThe slopes of the Valtellina Valley are so dangerously steep that harvesting is a nightmare. But this means that grapes receive maximum sun exposure, making for intense flavour concentration30 months in barrel and a further 36 in bottle make for seriously smooth tannins and deeper layers of flavour complexity. Ready for drinking right now, but can still benefit from up to a decade of further cellaring. Dried floral rose petal notes mingle with leather, heady earthy spices and dark chocolate. On the palate, it’s all stewed red berry flavours with a backbone of cherry freshness. Very smooth, yet still retains tannic grip and structure. Decant well before serving.
