Big R 2018

Vin de France

There’s a play on phonetics in the name of this sumptuous southern Rhône red. It’s from a family based in Vacqueyras since 1717, whose wines score high points with critics. Using classic grapes from many of the region’s crus, it is ripe and luscious.

Jean-François Arnoux heads the family domaine in Vacqueyras who produced this wine. They were one of the first in the region to estate bottle their wines, early in the 20th century, and, with demand outstripping supply, they started a pioneering negociant business in 1936. Today they are highly respected – you may know their 92-point Château Lestours Clocher Vacqueyras, and Châteauneuf Symphonie des Galets too. They work closely with family domaines to get just the fruit they are after. For Big R (as in ‘bigger’!) they made a ‘grand assemblage’ of late ripening, low yielding grapes, many from cru villages, mostly Grenache, plus other classics. Fruit-led with nuances of spice and herbs, this Vin de France red punches way above its weight.

"Low yielding vines and later ripening add up to a roller-coaster of flavours in this luscious red" Jehan Sacaze
