Gorgeous, rich Portuguese red from 15th generation winemaker Alvaro van Zeller. His family have been crafting fine ports since 1715 and now sumptuous dry reds, too. Using a trio of Douro grapes, aged in old port barrels, it’s brimful of spicy fruit.

Alvaro van Zeller’s family are most famous for establishing the finest port house of all time, Quinta do Noval. They are no longer there, but have a number of other remarkable estates, while Alvaro himself is famous for establishing the reputation of Douro’s dry reds. Named after his grandmother, Baronesa combines the family’s two talents: making a lavish Douro red from three top grapes, and finishing it in old port barrels to lend an extra layer of richness. All the grapes are from the van Zellers’ Douro vineyards, hand-picked, gently pressed and fermented to extract all their deep colour and floral aromas. Ten months in port barrels has added to the dense spice and complexity, as you might imagine. Decant and enjoy with slow-cooked lamb.

"Truly lavish with a hint of port sweetness, with some pleasing grip from tannins. Great balance" Jehan Sacaze
