Five Gold and many 90+ points for this white Rioja. It’s the flagship of Altos, a cellar founded just in 2006 by winemaker Jean-Marc Sauboua, and already winner of over 100 Golds. Old vine Viura aged a year in new oak, this is intense, rich, toasty.

Haut-Brion trained Jean-Marc Sauboua was raised in Bordeaux, but has a Spanish mother. For many years he’s made wine for us all over the world, Bordeaux in particular, but when he decided to start a project of his own, Rioja was his only thought. And only the highest, coolest part of the appellation – indeed, his vineyards are the highest in the region. Right from the start Jean-Marc’s aim was to make a Grand Cru style of Rioja, wines full of fruit and with balanced oak. Pigeage (pronounced peajarge), both red and white, is his flagship wine and in just seven vintages has won over 30 Golds. This 2016 has nine top awards, including five Golds. Pure, old vine Viura, aged in French oak, this is luscious, rich and long. Decant early or cellar.
