This Gevrey Premier Cru is from the Lignier family, whose domaine in Burgundy’s Morey Saint Denis dates back to the start of the 20th century. Today, this 15 hectare domaine is run by Benoît Stehly, great-grandson of the founder, Georges Lignier. In the words of Burgundy expert Serena Sutcliffe MW, “this domaine very often produces the essence of the (Pinot Noir) grape” – that’s to say, wines of remarkable purity. Les Combottes is Gevrey’s most southerly Premier Cru, surrounded by Grands Crus, and one of the most highly regarded. From a challenging year – the yields were way down, but the outcome was “a seriously delicious vintage” (Jancis Robinson MW) – this is a classic Gevrey. Serve with boeuf bourguignon, game or wild mushroom risotto.
