Château Bourgneuf 2016

Pomerol AOC

Wine Advocate wrote "2016 Bourgneuf from the Vayron family is a wine to watch" and awarded the Pomerol 94 Points. Next door to Trotanoy and L'Eglise Canet, this château has made a seductive 2016. Velvety fruit with layers of earthy chocolaty flavour.

Pomerol is the smallest region of Bordeaux's Right Bank, very little compared to expansive St Emilion just to the east. You would think nothing of importance happened in its rather flat vineyards, yet its wines are some of the most expensive in the world. There Merlot reaches creamy perfection on both the heavy clay and the sandy gravel of the plateau. Château Bourgneuf has been in the Vayron family for 200 years. It is very well situated, just to the west of Château Trotanoy and just southwest of L'Eglise Clinet. Its small vineyard holdings are on Pomerol's plateau and produce a seductive red in the hands of winemaker Frédérique Vayron. Ageing in a third new oak for just over a year lends an elegant touch to this very fine claret.
