For many years now father and son Julián and Javier Murúa have crafted our Barón de Barbón Rioja at their family cellar in Rioja. They’ve become very good friends and were delighted to make for us a special anniversary cuvée of this bestselling wine. Using grapes from prime, old vineyards around the bodega, this Rioja has even greater intensity of appealing ripe fruit. The berries were hand harvested and briefly aged in American oak barrels to lend a gentle touch of spicy vanilla, mocha and clove. Altogether a very tasty, easy going and moreish young Rioja, with that classic kiss of oak along with extra levels of fruit intensity. Enjoyable on its own, but even better with grilled lamb steaks, a spicy bean casserole or chicken and chorizo.
