Arquero Malbec 2018

San Juan

Fruit-filled, Argentinian Malbec and it's not from Mendoza. It is, in fact, from a family bodega in the San Juan region. Vines there lie at 700 metres high yet the climate is still warm, producing rich, supple ripeness in this velvety, oak-aged red.

Argentina’s Malbec is one of the trendiest wines on the planet. Most comes from Mendoza but further north lies San Juan, with vineyards at altitudes of around 700 metres. There you will find Antigua Bodega. The business was founded in 1990 by Don Luis Víctor Chirino. A builder by trade, but a huge wine enthusiast too, he bought two wineries and land to plant with vines. His HQ is a historic building and local landmark – erected in 1918 and one of the first in San Juan to be earthquake proof! After considerable restoration it’s been transformed into a magnificent cellar, with an art gallery and museum, thanks to Don Luis’ wife, and the help of local artists. This is a supple, oak matured Malbec, very moreish solo and with grilled red meats.
