Chat with Vinny
Big, bold fruit is exactly what we love about the burly American grape Zinfandel. And, as its name suggests, this wine deserves a Gold Star! It’s from sunny California, and balances all the dark, big on plum fruit with a cherry bite freshness.
Tasting notes
Soft berry, black pepper, Lodi’s classic dusty ripe tannins
Aroma
Black and red fruit jam aromas, intense and tempting
First planted in California in the 1850s, the Zinfandel grape has survived frosts, phylloxera, even prohibition! Indeed, the state can boast Zinfandel vines well over 100 years old. Gold Star’s vines aren’t quite that ancient but, nevertheless, the grapes they produce pack a punch of big, bold flavour. Lots of black fruit and chocolatey spice to revel in. Indeed, this grape is thought to be the same as southern Italy’s Primitivo. Maybe you’ve noticed the similarity – both dense, weighty and full of spice. From a well established, third generation family winery in the Lodi region, this is a tasty, moreish red. It’s best enjoyed with hearty red meat dishes – roast lamb or a beef casserole – a rare steak, or the bold flavours of a barbecue.
