Acclaimed by critics worldwide, the Diffonty family has helped put southern Rhône on the fine wine map. US wine writer and Rhône fan Robert Parker described the Cuvée du Vatican wines as “full-bodied, powerful, rich and oozing unmistakable provençal character”. Réserve de l'Abbé is made by Jean-Marc Diffonty from Grenache (and a little Syrah) with as much care and attention as he affords his top reds. The wine was fermented in a combination of stainless steel tanks and more traditional wooden vats before blending and bottling. It is sumptuously aromatic with red berry jam and wild herb complexity – and extra depth thanks to a great-quality 2019 vintage. Decant an hour before serving and enjoy with lamb, ratatouille or a hearty casserole.
