A magnificent Super Tuscan from Claudio Tipa’s pioneering estate in Italy’s famous Bolgheri region. Using both Cabernets, Merlot and Sangiovese, aged in expensive French barriques, this is a wine of superb power, length and richness. Savour slowly.

If you’re looking for an Italian of the highest calibre, Grattamacco is a name to remember. It’s a 10 hectare estate in Bolgheri, a splendid region that became famous in the 1970s as home to the first Super Tuscans. At the time, wine law prevented Chianti winemakers from adding Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot to the local Sangiovese, even though most people recognised it might add considerable ‘clout’ to the wines. The mavericks went ahead and did it anyway and sold their wines as Vino da Tavola at prices even higher than the finest Chiantis. Grattamacco was one of the region’s pioneers, producing its first vintage in 1978. The magnificent 2014, with two scores of 90+, is typically majestic with rich, elegant fruit and fine-grained tannins.
