More information
Gómez Cruzado was founded in 1886 in Rioja by the Duke of Moctezuma. It has 40 hectares of vines in a beautiful setting. The estate reached a zenith in the 1960s before slipping into relative obscurity. After massive investment it has now made a stunning comeback, described by Wine Advocate as “one of the most exciting developments in recent years”. Grapes for this 2016 were hand harvested into baskets so they arrived at the cellar in pristine condition, then the juice was fermented with natural yeasts for more complex flavour. Ageing in new French oak for five months has lent a layer of spice, whilst still retaining the fresh ripe blackberry and raspberry fruit and smooth tannins. Ideal with grilled red meats, tapas or mushroom ragout.
