Our search never ends for the best tasting Aussie wines, but with the export market for them red hot, the job gets ever harder. Thank goodness for our scout, in his classic VW Kombi van, who put in the miles to discover this cracking, tropical white.
There’s an ever increasing thirst for the wines of Australia – and not just from the UK (we ourselves have 100,000 customers out there after them) – demand from China is rising at an exponential rate. So getting our hands on good value, great tasting wines with class and character is becoming increasingly challenging. That’s where our Aussie-born scout comes in – Michael, nicknamed Mr Anderson (a reference to the Matrix movies). And with outback wineries flung far and wide it’s ideal to have a Kombi to hole up in. Meet our wine Mr Anderson Far and Wide, which captures all that’s great about New World Sauvignon. It leaps from the glass with tropical guava and a real zip of lime. In the words of Mr Anderson, “Hot diggity dog, it tastes good!”
If you love quality Italian wine, but don’t want to pay the earth, this is the red to choose. It’s from renowned Tuscan winemaker Paolo Masi and is very much Chianti in all but name. Intense cherry fruit – silky and totally irresistible to drink.
Poggerissi is a soft, cherry rich Sangiovese made just like Chianti, from grapes grown within the appellation boundaries and also from just outside. At his third generation family estate in Chianti’s Rufina district, Paolo Masi crafts consistently superb wines. He has done so ever since he graduated top of his class from the university in Florence and took over the family property, in 1990. Paolo makes a whole range of wines – from crisp whites to Chiantis and intense Super Tuscan reds. 2018 was another very good vintage in Tuscany, with particularly high quality grapes in and around Paolo’s estate. This gorgeous, silky, cherry scented red has attractive, intense fruit and freshness. It’s perfect on its own or with pizza, pasta or chicken.
