It's not often that truly great wines drop into a wine merchant's lap. Stationed in southern France, our buyer, Mark, heard rumour that magnums of the top wine from the great Roquebrun cellar were being sold off. That wine is the superb, limited-edition Seigneur d'Aupenac. Every vintage, this small premium village cellar, with its fine schist soils and high, southfacing slopes, holds back a few hundred magnums for use in shows and dinners. With the departure of Alain, their award-winning winemaker, the cellar agreed to sell the back vintages and Mark, without hesitation, said we'd take the lot. Made from Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre, the 2011 is still fresh, with complex notes of cassis, wild herbs and savoury spice, very silky and long.
