Meaning, literally, 'valley of the stones', Valdepeñas is a barren region in central Spain, home to "outstanding reds, which can be serious bargains" (Charlotte Hey, The Independent). Castillo Roquero pays homage to the region's famous castles, built in the 8th century atop the large rock formations of the central plains. This supple red is from a cellar founded in 1904 that can boast original vines dating back to this time. Scottish born winemaker Pamela Geddes combined the fruit of these ancient treasures with some from more recent plantings to produce an intensely flavoured red with great complexity and exuberant fruit. Matured for five years in American oak, this red is a real treat with roast pork, wild boar sausages or cured meats.
